Provincial legislator María Teresa Agostini said on April 9 that the Jujuy government continues to implement measures to control public spending and maintain fiscal balance, highlighting recent financial challenges due to reduced national revenue.
Agostini addressed the Legislature during the third ordinary session of the Chamber of Deputies, emphasizing that recent executive actions are part of a longstanding policy. She said that Executive Decree No. 5084 is “not an isolated measure” but rather fits into “a sustained policy of spending containment implemented in previous years.” The legislator noted similar decrees from past years, including No. 4116/2021, 101/2023, 1166/2024, and 2699/2025, which began during the pandemic and have continued as part of provincial fiscal strategy.
She stressed that Jujuy “maintains a policy of fiscal balance based on responsible management of public resources” and pointed out there have been no layoffs or cuts in sensitive areas such as health. Agostini also mentioned that since 2021 there has been a freeze on hiring for provincial staff positions but with exceptions for essential sectors.
Regarding public works projects, Agostini highlighted “the reactivation of projects that had been stalled,” mentioning National Route 34 as an example currently funded by provincial resources. She also referred to paving work completed over more than 110 kilometers using local funds. Additionally, she cited measures providing tax relief and efforts to promote large-scale investments in the province.
Discussing economic conditions, Agostini warned about falling national revenues affecting Jujuy’s finances: “In March tax collection fell by 9.5% in real terms while federal revenue sharing has dropped for five consecutive months with a decrease of 7.1% over this period.” She added that while the province spent about $150 billion pesos on salaries in March, it received only $120 billion from revenue sharing—resulting in a deficit of $30 billion pesos.
Agostini concluded by saying: “Spending containment measures aim to sustain financial predictability and ensure responsible management of public resources.”
