The 2nd National Seminar on Indigenous Languages in Argentina concluded this Wednesday, focusing on discussions about literacy processes in linguistically and culturally diverse contexts.
Key topics included the assessment of literacy in indigenous languages and the presentation of classroom projects that emphasize socially purposeful literacy. These initiatives aim to strengthen native languages through concrete, community-based experiences.
Merardo Monné, a representative for Intercultural Bilingual and Rural Education in the province, delivered a presentation on the creation of contextualized educational materials and addressed new challenges facing bilingual education. Monné stated, “Literacy must be a process with social, political, and emotional meaning, which respects identities and promotes the active participation of peoples in the education system.”
The seminar’s closing session was attended by Melania Ottaviano, national head of Intercultural Bilingual Education Modalities, and Carlos Torrendell, Secretary of Education at the Ministry of Human Capital. Both officials highlighted the importance of advancing public policies that ensure culturally and linguistically relevant education. The event also emphasized the need to strengthen training spaces and cooperation among provinces to further promote intercultural bilingual education across Argentina.
