The Ministry of Security announced on March 31 that at least 32 pilgrims of the Virgen de Copacabana de Punta Corral were evacuated after being stranded in the areas of Primer Calvario and El Angosto, located in Tumbaya. The incident occurred when a river rose due to adverse weather conditions.
The evacuation highlights the risks faced by those engaging in outdoor activities, especially in mountainous regions where sudden changes in weather can create dangerous situations.
Rescue teams worked overnight to open a safe path and install ropes to help move those affected. The rescued individuals were taken to an emergency tent set up nearby, where they received assistance and support. Authorities reported that there were no injuries or personal damages as a result of the incident. Efforts are ongoing regarding a vehicle that remains stuck in the area.
According to officials, personnel from Civil Defense, Police Firefighters, and Volunteer Firefighters from Maimará participated in what was described as a safe and efficient operation.
Authorities recommended that people planning outdoor activities stay informed about weather conditions and avoid traveling through risky areas. In case of emergencies, residents are advised to call 911 or Civil Defense at 103.
