Provincial, national, and municipal authorities inaugurated the remodeled and technologically modernized Horacio Guzmán international bridge in La Quiaca on March 30. The ceremony was led by Jujuy Governor Carlos Sadir and Argentina’s Minister of Security, Alejandra Monteoliva.

The project aims to improve the efficiency and safety of a border crossing that sees significant movement of people and vehicles. Governor Sadir said the intervention will allow for better work through modernization at this important crossing, noting that the upgrades provide “more speed and more security” at a site with high traffic.

Sadir also highlighted collaboration among the provincial government, La Quiaca municipality, and national agencies as key to enabling both construction work and technological upgrades. He praised efforts by Argentina, Bolivia, and Chile to form a committee addressing border issues, suggesting similar modernization should be considered for other strategic crossings such as Jama. The governor added that these improvements come as the region anticipates growth linked to plans for a free trade zone in La Quiaca—a development expected to boost commercial activity and tourism.

Minister Monteoliva described the completed works as a result of coordinated action between national and provincial governments. She emphasized Jujuy’s support in carrying out complementary enhancements at the border complex. Monteoliva noted new technology introduced includes a cargo scanner with parking for trucks; separate lanes for buses and private vehicles; over 60 surveillance cameras; biometric identification tools; and systems for document control—all intended to improve security measures during migration processes.

The renovation included upgrading offices throughout the border complex, paving loading areas, building shelters for transport workers, creating spaces dedicated to long-distance passenger checks, installing new inspection booths for customs controls on private vehicles, separating traffic flows during inspections, refurbishing pedestrian control buildings, improving staff offices, upgrading public restrooms—and further strengthening service conditions at this critical crossing point.
