Authorities in Jujuy announced on Apr. 12 that entry to Laguna Esmeralda is strictly prohibited because of geological dangers and the need for environmental protection. The warning comes as images of the lagoon have become popular on social media, attracting tourists who may not be aware of the risks.
Officials say that while Laguna Esmeralda has become a trending destination online, its terrain is highly unstable. The lagoon was formed by a natural blockage in a ravine, which continues to develop fissures and causes frequent rockfalls. These conditions have already led to landslides in the area, creating real dangers for visitors.
In addition to physical hazards, authorities highlight two main reasons for restricting access: the site is located within a private nature reserve without any valid permits for public circulation, and it serves as a refuge for the taruca—a native species currently recovering its population. The taruca requires silence and minimal human presence; unauthorized visits disrupt their life cycle and repopulation efforts.
For those seeking outdoor activities, officials recommend choosing from many authorized experiences available in Jujuy such as hiking, trekking, horseback riding, and wildlife watching—all operated by professional guides. Tourists are advised to check official sources before planning trips based on social media content, use the “Tu Jujuy” app for information about authorized guides and providers, or visit local tourist information centers for advice on safe routes.
Authorities stress that enjoying Jujuy’s natural beauty responsibly helps protect both visitors’ safety and local wildlife.
