Former president of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, was released from the hospital on March 27 after being treated for acute pneumonia and has started serving house arrest at his home in Brasilia. The decision was authorized by Supreme Court judge Alexandre de Moraes, who ordered a “humanitarian” house arrest for at least 90 days due to Bolsonaro’s health condition.

Bolsonaro, aged 71, had been hospitalized in mid-March with a severe case of pneumonia that required intensive antibiotic treatment. After showing improvement, doctors allowed him to continue his recovery at home under medical supervision and rehabilitation.

The former head of state is serving a 27-year prison sentence for his involvement in an attempted coup following the 2022 elections, where he lost to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

During the period of house arrest, Bolsonaro is required to wear an electronic ankle monitor. He will also have restricted visits and is prohibited from using social media or communicating freely as mandated by Brazilian authorities.

The restrictions are part of the conditions set by the court while Bolsonaro recovers at home.
