Chilean President José Antonio Kast confirmed on Apr. 6 his country’s support for Argentina’s sovereignty claim over the Malvinas Islands during a bilateral meeting with Argentine President Javier Milei at Casa Rosada.
The announcement was formalized in a joint statement from the foreign ministries of both countries, in which Chile expressed its backing for what it called Argentina’s “legitimate sovereign rights” over the Malvinas, South Georgia, South Sandwich Islands, and surrounding maritime areas.
The Chilean government also urged Argentina and the United Kingdom to resume negotiations aimed at reaching a peaceful and definitive resolution to the conflict, in accordance with United Nations resolutions and other international organizations. During their meeting, Milei thanked Chile for its historic support regarding the Malvinas issue, which remains central to Argentine foreign policy.
Kast’s visit marks his first official trip abroad since taking office and signals a strengthening of bilateral relations between Buenos Aires and Santiago. Both governments are seeking to deepen strategic ties and coordinate positions on regional matters such as security, energy, and international relations.
The renewed cooperation reflects growing ideological alignment between the two administrations as they aim to consolidate their partnership within the region.
