Several community organizations are continuing their efforts to provide food and support to children and older adults in Malvinas Argentinas, according to an April 4 announcement. The merendero “A pulmón” remains active in its mission, with Delia Vargas and a group of seven volunteer mothers preparing snacks each week for those in need.
The work of these organizations is important as they help address food insecurity among vulnerable groups. For many residents, these spaces offer not only meals but also emotional support during difficult times.
From Monday to Wednesday, tea and mate are prepared at “A pulmón,” while on Thursdays, if resources allow, lunch is served on Puerto Argentino street between Chaile and Torres in the “16 de Mayo” settlement. Vargas said, “Sometimes when there is milk, we make rice pudding; other times, chocolate—it depends on what people donate. We are waiting for help from anyone who wants to contribute.” She added that bread is distributed only when donated by bakeries or factories.
Since March 22, 2017, about one hundred seventy children and twenty older adults have received meals from this initiative. Vargas said the organization has been operating for nine years thanks to ongoing community support: “We have children from one year old up to sixteen.” The group also exchanges gently used clothing for those interested.
Other local initiatives include the “Construyendo Esperanza” dining hall in San Pedro led by Lindaura Farfán. This group prepares nutritious meals and desserts such as anchi for families in Barrio Libertad. Similarly, the “San Antonio” dining hall serves hot lunches like stews and pasta dishes daily to families facing hardship in the “15 Hectáreas” neighborhood of San Pedro.
These ongoing efforts highlight the importance of grassroots community service as a source of stability for many families.
