A group of drivers from the GAG Cooperative for interjurisdictional remises repaired potholes on National Route 34, according to an April 3 announcement. The drivers said they were tired of risking their lives and damaging their vehicles while traveling daily between the Yungas and Valles regions in Jujuy.
The issue matters because National Route 34 is one of the most important and heavily used roads in northern Argentina. Its poor condition has led to mechanical breakdowns and safety risks for both passengers and drivers.
The drivers decided to take action themselves by stopping work for several hours to fill the potholes with earth and gravel. They received help from a local construction supply company, which lent them a truck to transport materials needed for the emergency repairs. “The craters in the asphalt made driving unsustainable,” they said, adding that lack of maintenance by national authorities had created dangerous conditions.
Community efforts like this have occurred before along Route 34, which has been subject to legal complaints and public protests in cities such as San Pedro de Jujuy and Libertador General San MartÃn. Residents have repeatedly called attention to the urgent need for repaving due to heavy traffic from trucks and passenger vehicles.
This latest initiative by local drivers highlights ongoing concerns about road safety infrastructure in the region. Observers say permanent solutions are needed rather than temporary fixes.
