On the occasion of International Childhood Cancer Day, observed every February 15, the Ministry of Health announced reinforced efforts in early detection and comprehensive care for children and adolescents with cancer. The only Pediatric Oncohematology Unit in the province, located at Hospital Materno Infantil, continues to offer specialized care through an interdisciplinary team. This team includes pediatricians, oncohematologists, neurologists, nephrologists, cardiologists, otolaryngologists, infectious disease specialists, psychologists, social workers, nutritionists, nurses, and support services such as imaging, laboratory work, and hemotherapy.
María Luz Cosentini, head of the Pediatric Oncohematology Unit at Hospital Materno Infantil, emphasized the need to recognize warning signs and seek medical advice promptly. She stated: “While childhood cancer cannot be prevented, early diagnosis allows for timely treatment and significantly improves survival.”
Symptoms that should prompt a medical consultation include persistent paleness, unexplained bleeding or prolonged fever, new lumps or bumps on the body, frequent headaches or bone pain, vomiting without cause or other notable changes in general health. Timely referrals by pediatricians and general practitioners are crucial for activating diagnostic protocols. The hospital provides not only clinical treatment but also social, educational and emotional support to patients and their families.
The unit also coordinates transfers to higher complexity centers when needed to ensure continuity of care and equitable access. Cosentini concluded: “The central message on this important date is clear: consulting in time and referring promptly saves lives. Coordinated work between the community, health teams and hospitals leads to better outcomes and more opportunities for every child in Jujuy.”
