The Ministry of Health of Jujuy announced on March 12 that the fifth kidney transplant within the province’s public health system was successfully carried out at Hospital Pablo Soria. The procedure was made possible through organ donation and benefited a local patient who had been on the waiting list.
This development is significant as it highlights the ongoing efforts to provide free, high-quality treatment for chronic renal failure to the community. The ministry said that these achievements demonstrate improvements in accessibility and response within the public healthcare sector.
José Illanes, head of Renal Transplant at Hospital Pablo Soria, said, “This fifth kidney transplant in Hospital Pablo Soria was performed on a patient from Jujuy who was on the waiting list and thanks to a donor also from the province. We are very happy with how smoothly the entire process went.”
Illanes explained that the surgery took place over nearly five hours and involved a team of three surgeons, anesthesiologists, surgical technicians, and post-operative care in a specialized transplant unit. He added, “The intervention took place yesterday, with almost five hours of surgical work… where the person is evolving favorably.”
He also emphasized the capabilities of their transplant unit: “With capacity to study patients in a very short time so they are ready for potential organ reception, with organized processes and outstanding functioning besides compatibility analyses… we can verify and fulfill each stage quickly.”
Illanes concluded by noting Jujuy’s tradition of solidarity regarding organ donation: “Jujuy has always been a supportive province and increasingly committed to organ donation,” he said. He recalled that since around 2019 there has been increased awareness-raising and training efforts which now allow transplants to be performed in public hospitals with comprehensive support for patients.
The first public sector kidney transplant in Jujuy took place on December 24, 2024; three more were completed during the first half of 2025.
