The Ministry of Health of Jujuy announced that the first pediatric oral and maxillofacial surgery in the Puna region was performed at Dr. Jorge Uro Hospital in La Quiaca on December 16. The procedure was carried out successfully by a team of dental professionals, marking a significant step in specialized care for the area.
According to the Ministry, this development aligns with the Strategic Health Plan II, which aims to decentralize health services throughout the province. The hospital’s installed capacity and highly trained professional teams enabled them to carry out this intervention on an 8-year-old patient.
“It is a source of pride for our hospital, for the entire region, and for the public system to achieve this milestone in La Quiaca. Performing these types of interventions provides solutions by reducing costs and wait times for families. In this case, we also resolved a pediatric condition that affected quality of life without needing referral elsewhere, once again demonstrating that high-complexity procedures can be done here with quality and human warmth,” said Fernanda ElĂas, director of Hospital Uro.
The patient had been evaluated after an outpatient consultation. The clinical diagnosis identified retained supernumerary teeth causing functional issues as well as problems related to aesthetics, speech, swallowing, bite alignment, and dental development. After pre-surgical examinations were completed, the surgery proceeded satisfactorily. According to reports from medical staff, recovery has been favorable so far.
The operation was coordinated by Dr. Gabriel Pinaya, resident dentist specializing in maxillofacial surgery. He worked together with the hospital’s dentistry service as well as surgical and anesthesiology teams led by Dr. Monica Jozami. The interdisciplinary approach allowed comprehensive treatment with commitment from all involved professionals.
