Fish remains a popular choice for residents of Jujuy as Holy Week approaches, with local fishmongers preparing for an expected increase in sales, according to a March 28 report. Canal 7 de Jujuy conducted a survey at a store located in Mercado 6 de Agosto in the capital city to gather current fish prices.
The survey found that pacú and boga are selling for $19,000 per kilo, bagre is priced at $20,000 per kilo, sábalo at $13,000 per kilo, fillets of merluza at $19,000 per kilo, surubà at $36,000 per kilo, pejerrey at $21,000 per kilo, pink salmon at $45,000 per kilo, trout at $28,000 per kilo and squid at $23,000 per kilo. The consulted business reported that there has been an increase of 1,500 pesos in fish prices over recent days.
In addition to seafood prices rising ahead of the holiday period when demand typically increases due to traditional observances and meals associated with Holy Week,
Canal 7 also surveyed ingredient costs for making humitas—a traditional dish—at the Municipal Market near the old terminal area. According to their findings,
a dozen sweet and creamy corn cobs ideal for humitas cost around $4,000 but are also offered as three for $1,000. Other key ingredients include squash sold by the kilogram for $1.500,
onions costing $1.000 a kilogram,
green peppers priced at $2.000 and red peppers reaching up to $4.000 a kilogram.
Based on these market rates,
the total cost of preparing humitas with one dozen corn cobs could start from approximately $8.000.
For those who choose to add basil,
a small bunch is available for about $1.000.
