Faithful gathered on April 4 for Good Friday celebrations at the Cathedral Basilica, where expressions of devotion marked the day. The events included the adoration of the cross in the evening, followed by a traditional Stations of the Cross procession through downtown streets.
The significance of these observances lies in their role as central acts of faith for many community members, bringing together people across generations to commemorate Good Friday with solemnity and unity.
The cross adoration began at 6 p.m. outside the cathedral, where participants brought their own crosses to receive blessings and give thanks. Many approached with emotion to venerate an image of Christ. Later, starting at 8 p.m., a large group processed through city streets carrying candles and displaying visible signs of devotion during the Stations of the Cross.
Leading the procession was an image of Christ Yacente, accompanied by Bishop Daniel Fernández and ministers. Members from different groups took turns carrying religious images: police officers first carried Christ Yacente’s shrine, men then took over; women carried an image of Our Lady of Sorrows; young people bore St. John’s image and finally, they carried the Cross of Hope.
During one station along the route, Father Manuel Alfaro said: “In this pastoral year we pray for young people and vocations so that we may find in them joy in service.” In another moment he addressed all present saying: “When we fall in life, may mercy lift us up” and “help us so that none among us crucifies you again from our place.” The event was described as being marked by respectful silence despite little activity elsewhere in town—young people, adults, children all attended as families participated together.
After following Belgrano Street to Lavalle and Alvear before returning to finish at Belgrano Street’s cathedral atrium with Bishop Fernández’s blessing—the community reaffirmed its faith alongside visiting tourists.
Looking ahead to Holy Saturday activities at various churches across local neighborhoods—including vigils with blessings—organizers invited everyone to participate in upcoming Easter services.
