The national government announced on Apr. 9 a salary increase of 123 percent for its ministers over the past five months, raising their monthly pay to more than eight million pesos starting in May.
This decision comes as public employees and retirees continue to face economic challenges. The increase also applies to secretaries and undersecretaries, following the end of a salary freeze for this year.
Until recently, cabinet members received about 3.5 million pesos per month, but the new adjustment places their earnings at a much higher level compared to other workers. While government officials see significant raises, many retirees have experienced a real decrease of 22 percent in minimum pension payments due to changes in the update formula.
The announcement highlights the difference between official policies and public realities. The average salary for public administration workers is reported at around 1.2 million pesos, while minimum incomes are about 600,000 pesos per month.
Observers note that these developments may further widen income gaps within Argentina’s workforce.
