Deputy Juan Grabois formally requested on Mar. 28 that President Javier Milei and his sister, Presidential Secretary General Karina Milei, be summoned for questioning in the ongoing investigation into an alleged fraud involving the cryptocurrency $Libra.
The request is based on forensic analysis of the cell phone belonging to Mauricio Novelli, described as a business coordinator and personal friend of the Milei siblings. According to the complaint, investigators found a document on Novelli’s device that appears to show an agreement to pay five million U.S. dollars in exchange for promoting $Libra.
“There is more than enough evidence for them to have to give explanations,” said Grabois, who explained that the available proof suggests a criminal plan ranging from negotiation through systematic attempts at cover-up.
The legal filing also targets prosecutor Eduardo Taiano, whom plaintiffs accuse of stalling the case in order to protect Javier and Karina Milei. The complaint alleges that Taiano delayed access for months to Novelli’s phone data and has not yet questioned him as a key figure in the case.
Recent developments include Juan Bautista Mahiques being appointed Minister of Justice—a move seen by some as part of efforts by Karina Milei to gain control over justice-related matters. According to Grabois, this could be intended “to kill” the investigation. Meanwhile, Novelli himself has requested all evidence obtained from his phone be declared invalid due to claims it shows under-the-table payments made before and after Javier Milei took office.
Grabois commented on how openly involved parties acted: “Los implicados, incluyendo a los propios funcionarios públicos, dejaron todas sus huellas extraordinariamente visibles.” The call for questioning extends beyond just Javier and Karina Milei; it includes others such as Novelli’s associates Terrones Godoy and Sergio Morales.
