The Health Ministry of the province announced on April 5 that the Regional Hemotherapy Center and the Single Coordination Center for Ablation and Implant of Jujuy are continuing efforts to promote the National Registry of Bone Marrow Donors. This follows the recent observance of National Bone Marrow Donor Day on April 1.
Officials say that increasing the number of registered donors is important because it raises the chances of finding a compatible match for patients in need. Ivone Ruiz Huidobro, spokesperson for the Regional Hemotherapy Center, said on social media, “cuanto más sea la cantidad de donantes que se inscriban, es mayor la posibilidad de encontrar un donante compatible”. She explained that registration is voluntary, free, and open to anyone eligible to donate a unit of blood between 18 and 40 years old.
After choosing to join the National Registry, a blood sample is sent to Argentina’s Central Unique Coordinator Institute for Ablation and Implant (Incucai) for genetic testing. Once included in the registry, individuals may be contacted if they are found to be a suitable match; however, officials note that full compatibility remains challenging.
Those interested in registering can visit the Regional Hemotherapy Center at Snopek Avenue and Teniente Bolzán in Alto Comedero from Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m., or Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mobile blood collection units are also available in San Salvador de Jujuy and other areas.
