Nearly 600 people participated in the “Diabetes and Wellness” walk-run event, marking the end of Blue Month. The event was organized by the Ministry of Health as part of its ongoing efforts to promote healthy habits and early detection of chronic diseases.
The activity took place in Alto Comedero, starting from Hospital Snopek, and featured three categories: short distances for children, a 2-kilometer inclusive walk with pets, and a 4.5-kilometer route that included participants over 60 years old. Various local organizations contributed to the event, including Éxodo Jujeño, Alto Comedero Volunteer Firefighters, Nuevo Horizonte, Xuma, Estación Saludable, the Adultos Mayores area of the Municipality, ISJ, IUPS, Banda Tacita de Plata, Actívate, Paso a Paso, CEPAM, Salud Activa, Carlos Jure, local CAPS centers, Adolescencia program representatives, Indigenous Health teams and UR7.
Gustavo Bouhid, Minister of Health for the province and leader of the Strategic Health Plan II approved by Governor Carlos Sadir said: “Prevention saves lives. If we do not act in time on diabetes, obesity and hypertension, the system must deal with consequences: heart attacks (infarctions), strokes (ACV) and amputations. That is why we need people to get checked and for health teams to stay close in every neighborhood.”
Bouhid also emphasized the work done by healthcare personnel during these community events: “We have teams present throughout the province checking blood pressure and glucose levels while supporting each person. This walk-run shows that when the community gets involved there is real impact.”
He encouraged health workers not to lose motivation: “I ask our team not to give up. Being beside people is essential and as one neighbor said today: we know it can be done; it’s a matter of awareness and sustained work.”
The event concluded with music performed by Banda Tacita de Plata. The Ministry acknowledged support from other government departments such as the Secretariat of Sports and General Coordination Secretariat for Health through their Promotion and Prevention Board. These groups continue to organize physical activities across the province aimed at encouraging regular exercise, proper hydration and nutrition as well as periodic health checks.
