National deputy Mónica Frade of the Civic Coalition filed a judicial complaint on April 3 to investigate the alleged discretionary granting of large loans by Banco de la Nación Argentina to legislators, advisers, and digital media figures aligned with the current administration. The complaint alleges that these benefits were awarded without considering the recipients’ ability to repay.
The issue is significant because it raises concerns about potential misuse of public funds and possible favoritism within a major state-owned financial institution. The case centers on whether established banking standards were followed in approving these loans.
According to the complaint, those who received favorable treatment from Banco de la Nación Argentina include Secretary of Finance Federico Furiase, directors from the Central Bank, and national deputies Mariano Campero, Santiago Santurio, and Lorena Villaverde. Sharif Menem, an adviser in the Chamber of Deputies, is also named among those listed as beneficiaries.
Frade said many of these credits were approved despite applicants lacking strong commercial backgrounds or stable employment that would justify such amounts. The most critical points highlighted in her filing include high loan amounts unrelated to declared incomes; cases where loan applications initially blocked at branch offices outside Buenos Aires were later approved by central authorities; and a special line that allegedly made public funds more accessible for individuals with political connections.
The Civic Coalition has requested an investigation into possible criminal offenses such as influence peddling, incompatible negotiations with public office duties, and embezzlement. Frade said a strategic institution was used “to benefit a particular political sector at the expense of regular customers.” It will now be up to judicial authorities to determine whether credit files met technical requirements or if Banco de la Nación Argentina operated as “a box of privileges for the ruling caste,” as stated in the complaint.
