The Government of Jujuy announced on March 28 a comprehensive operation to assist, prevent, and accompany pilgrims during the pilgrimage to Punta Corral. The initiative includes actions across health, security, infrastructure, and environmental sectors throughout the entire route.
The operation is significant as it aims to ensure the safety and well-being of thousands of participants in one of the region’s most important religious events. Multiple government departments are working together to provide direct assistance and maintain secure conditions along the pilgrimage path.
In healthcare, authorities have implemented telemedicine for the first time during a pilgrimage event by connecting digital health systems with key hospitals. A field hospital in Tumbaya serves as an operational center linked with major hospitals for real-time consultations. Strategic health posts offer continuous care along the route using equipment such as ultrasound machines, X-rays, and multiparametric monitors that transmit studies online. Prior to the event, guidelines on hydration, clothing, nutrition, physical effort control, and altitude symptom awareness were distributed among pilgrims.
Emergency services (SAME 107) provide ambulance coverage and teams in difficult-to-access areas while ensuring satellite connectivity where mobile signals are unavailable. These services are integrated into telemedicine systems for timely patient evaluation and transfer when necessary.
Security forces conduct traffic control operations at routes leading to Tumbaya and ascent zones while assisting pilgrims throughout their journey. Civil Defense coordinates with other agencies to maintain safe conditions at high-traffic points.
Social support is available through installations in Tumbaya and Tunalito offering shelter spaces and direct assistance for vulnerable individuals. Interdisciplinary teams remain present during the entire pilgrimage period.
Infrastructure improvements include maintenance work on roads leading to Punta Corral as well as upgrades in critical sections for increased safety. Environmental initiatives encourage responsible waste collection through contests among sikuris bands—musical groups participating in cultural traditions—and promote environmentally conscious practices among all attendees.
Government officials said they will continue coordinated efforts across departments throughout the event “to guarantee assistance, prevention and accompaniment during all stages of the pilgrimage,” focusing both on personal safety and travel conditions.
