A central ceremony to commemorate the 44th anniversary of the Malvinas campaign was led by Governor Carlos Sadir on Apr. 2, honoring former combatants and those who died defending Argentina’s sovereignty over the islands. The event, marking Veterans and Fallen Soldiers Day in Malvinas, took place at the Caídos en Malvinas square at Avenida Santibáñez and Yaraví in Jujuy’s capital.
The commemoration began with the raising of national flags and a rendition of the Argentine National Anthem performed by the Éxodo Jujeño Military Band from Mountain Regiment 20 “Cazadores de los Andes.” Authorities then laid floral tributes at a monument dedicated to combatants.
After a moment of silence, Bishop Secar Daniel Fernández reflected on those who lost their lives in battle and called for renewed commitment to love and build the country with justice and solidarity. Governor Sadir said that it is important “always to accompany veterans” as part of Argentina’s ongoing commitment to the Malvinas cause. “There is a commitment from all Argentines regarding the Malvinas cause: working so that everyone knows about it,” he said.
Sadir also highlighted remembrance for “the 15 people from Jujuy who lost their lives during our recovery of our Argentine Malvinas.” He added, “The task is not only to remember; it includes generating concrete actions for daily support for the Malvinas cause.”
Antonio Leguina, president of Jujuy’s Center for War Veterans of Malvinas, described how this event marked Argentina deeply while noting ongoing pain among many veterans after returning home. “Today we remember the 649 fallen soldiers and those from Jujuy who gave their lives on these war islands in Atlantic waters. We thank the governor for his constant support for war veterans in Jujuy,” Leguina said.
Leguina urged continued efforts toward promoting awareness about Malvinas history in schools, universities, and other institutions so future generations carry forward its legacy. Since last year, Law No. 6463 allows ex-combatants from Malvinas to administer loyalty oaths to Argentina’s flag for fourth-grade students across primary schools in Jujuy province.
The ceremony concluded with a parade held at Mountain Infantry Regiment 20’s sports grounds “Cazadores de Andes.” The governor was joined by San Salvador Mayor Raúl Jorge; Minister Carlos Stanic; judicial officials; Colonel Julián Rojo; Defensora General María Gabriela Burgos; National Deputy María Inés Zigarán; provincial lawmakers; local councilors; national authorities based in Jujuy; security force representatives; veterans—and various political, educational, business, and religious leaders.
