Lourdes Navarro, President of the Provincial Council of Women, Gender Equality, and Respect for Diversity, participated on April 2 in a dialogue organized by United Nations Women Argentina and the German Embassy. The event brought together women leaders from across the country to discuss challenges related to care work and gender equality.

The meeting took place at the German Embassy in Buenos Aires as part of International Women’s Day activities. Its goal was to analyze connections between poverty, caregiving responsibilities, and economic autonomy for women and girls.

Titled “Sustaining Equality: Poverty, Care Work, and Economic Autonomy,” the gathering included representatives from government agencies, civil society organizations, and international bodies. Participants examined structural barriers faced by women experiencing poverty or excessive caregiving duties.

Navarro joined a panel where she presented initiatives implemented in Jujuy over recent years. She highlighted public policies aimed at preventing and addressing gender-based violence. “The enactment of the Iara Law established an institutional framework that strengthens state responses to violence,” Navarro said during her remarks. She also noted that this law led to the creation of more than 30 municipal gender offices which improved coordination with provincial authorities.

Navarro explained that twelve interagency working groups were formed with technical support from United Nations Women to develop a Strategic Plan for Prevention and Eradication of Gender-Based Violence and Diversity (2026-2028). This plan sets clear guidelines for government intervention focusing on prevention efforts, cross-agency collaboration, as well as strengthening services supporting vulnerable women and members of sexual diversity communities.

She emphasized that building this strategic plan involved input from various communities across Jujuy province: “This collective process ensures inclusion of diverse voices—especially those from rural areas—leading to more effective responses against different forms of violence.” Navarro concluded by thanking United Nations Women Argentina and the German Embassy for creating spaces that consider experiences outside Buenos Aires.
