On February 4, World Cancer Day is observed to raise awareness about the importance of regular check-ups for early detection and control of cancer. The Ministry of Health in Jujuy highlights that periodic medical consultations can lead to earlier diagnosis and improved treatment options.
The Provincial Directorate of Cancer oversees five public health strategies focused on comprehensive approaches to cervical, colorectal, breast, and prostate cancers, as well as palliative care. Carlos Zurueta, head of the department, stated: “Our objective is to strengthen actions of promotion, prevention and monitoring of preventive studies against cancer, relying on highly experienced medical specialists who are also involved in patient care.”
Zurueta pointed out that Jujuy has lower cancer incidence and mortality rates compared to other regions. He attributed this trend partly to effective public policies. For example, since 2011 the use of HPV testing for early detection of cervical cancer has enabled treatment at earlier stages. This policy reduced the mortality rate from 14 per 100,000 inhabitants in 2011 to 8 per 100,000 currently.
“With integrated actions through our programs, we strengthen community, individual and personal participation. Along with health teams and the Ministry we can achieve a path where disease is detected in its earliest clinical stage. This not only results in less invasive treatments but also offers a more favorable outlook for quality of life and survival,” said Zurueta. He noted that cervical, breast, colorectal and prostate cancers are the most common types found in the province.
Public health teams remain available for consultation and screenings. Zurueta emphasized: “Take care of your health as an essential asset in life.” For further information or questions, residents can visit the Provincial Directorate of Cancer at Güemes corner Cnel.
