Health authorities in Jujuy announced on April 11 that the province has confirmed 49 cases of chikungunya, with an additional 17 probable cases under laboratory evaluation. Most patients are experiencing mild to moderate symptoms and are recovering well, though a pediatric patient required hospitalization but remains in stable condition.

The majority of new chikungunya cases have been reported in Aguas Calientes (7), followed by Caimancito (2), San Pedro (2), and San Salvador de Jujuy (1). The current distribution includes Aguas Calientes with 29 confirmed cases, San Pedro with six, Caimancito with five, Perico with four, San Salvador de Jujuy with three, Libertador General San Martín and Yuto each reporting one case.

Officials stress the importance of preventive measures against mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue, zika, and chikungunya. Residents are advised to eliminate standing water from containers like cans or buckets, change water daily in pet bowls and vases, clean patios and drains regularly, scrub water storage containers thoroughly, and keep tanks covered. To prevent bites, people should use repellents as directed—especially pregnant individuals—wear light-colored clothing that covers arms and legs, install screens on doors and windows, protect infants with mosquito netting, and consider using environmental repellents indoors.

Symptoms commonly reported include joint pain, muscle aches, headaches, and fever. Health officials urge anyone experiencing these symptoms to seek immediate medical attention at local health centers or hospitals. Virtual consultations are also available daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

In addition to monitoring chikungunya cases, the province continues active surveillance for respiratory viruses. Influenza A is currently most prevalent among circulating viruses; some COVID-19 cases have also been detected while no respiratory syncytial virus infections have been recorded so far. Most respiratory illnesses remain mild without requiring hospitalization; however the health system remains prepared for more serious situations if needed.
