The municipality of La Quiaca announced on April 10 a new infrastructure project to pave Avenida León Gieco, aiming to improve traffic flow, connectivity, and road safety in the area. The announcement was made by Mayor Dante Velázquez, who said the work will cover 3,900 square meters of asphalt and include new lighting and public space improvements.
Velázquez said that what residents had long called “the avenue of neglect and postponement” would finally see progress. He described Avenida León Gieco as a strategic sector connecting Escuela Primaria N° 463 Jesús Olmedo and serving as a main corridor for urban passenger transport.
The mayor also referred to previous administrations returning national funds intended for this project. “Someone did not understand that the funds are for the progress of La Quiaca and not for personal benefit. The work will begin this Thursday, and we estimate that by the end of the month we can deliver it to residents,” Velázquez said.
Emanuel Churquina, Secretary of Public Works, explained that cold asphalt will be used over an area of 3,900 square meters. Lighting will be improved with a complete replacement of luminaires to increase safety. Additional works include constructing curbs and correcting drainage features, as well as rehabilitating adjacent spaces to create a multi-use sports facility.
Velázquez highlighted the importance of this initiative: “It is a much-desired, necessary and fundamental work for our city and area because it is the first stage linking other neighborhoods; it will help organize traffic flow and reinforce road safety.”
He concluded by asking residents for patience during construction: “We have to work on leveling the ground and other complementary tasks. We will inform about detours onto other streets soon. Taxpayer money is being invested in concrete projects,” Velázquez said.
