Liliana Suárez of the “La Mismiada” workshop in Tumbaya received first place in the Textiles, Projected Loom category for the third consecutive year at the 43rd International Crafts Fair in Córdoba, according to an April 1 announcement. She was also awarded an honorary diploma as a finalist for the Grand Acquisition Prize.
The event is being held at the Córdoba Fair Complex from March 28 through Sunday. The fair brings together skilled artisans using a variety of techniques, urban exhibitors, and commercial offerings from across Argentina. Thousands of visitors attend daily during Holy Week between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m.
Suárez said her winning piece this year is “a poncho made from llama fiber dyed with artificial colors,” which took her fifteen days to create. She explained that it is part of her new collection called Amancay: “Amancay is the flower of high altitudes, from cold and dry climates where it emerges radiant like the sun; that’s how my new collection was born.” She added that this textile proposal features “intense red, magenta, orange, and essential green colors.”
Describing her process further, Suárez said: “This garment is woven on a foot loom using two wefts: one serves as a base and the other creates patterns—in this case waves and zigzag motifs resulting in this beautiful work.” Both distinctions—a winner’s diploma and an honorary diploma—were presented to Suárez during a ceremony at the fairgrounds.
In previous years, she won first place with different pieces: a llama fiber poncho dyed with natural tints from her ‘Antigales’ collection in edition forty-one and a pure llama fiber bed runner with intricate orange and blue designs in edition forty-two.
The ongoing recognition highlights Suárez’s continued excellence among Argentine textile artisans.
