Authorities in Maimará announced on April 7 the upcoming 49th Festival del Choclo y el Folclore, a music and gastronomy event set to take place this weekend. The announcement was made by Mayor Susana Prieto alongside festival founders Carlos Aparicio and Jorge Quispe, who highlighted that this edition marks the beginning of celebrations leading up to the festival’s fiftieth anniversary.
The festival is seen as an important event for the local community, offering both cultural and economic benefits. According to Prieto, “the Festival del choclo y el folclore as well as other activities generated by the municipality aim at local, family, and regional economic development.” She also said it “promotes fellowship between villages and working together for the well-being of each resident of Quebrada.”
The event will feature traditional foods based on locally grown corn such as humita, tamal, choclo with goat cheese, pastel de choclo, empanadas de choclo, and dishes paired with high-altitude wines produced in Maimará. The mayor said that families and entrepreneurs have prepared thoroughly to welcome visitors expected over Saturday and Sunday.
Musical performances are scheduled across both days. On Saturday night artists like Joaquín Sosa, Las cuatro cuerdas, Alma chaqueña, Copleros, Canto del alma, Wara Calpanchay, Kimsa Juy and Las voces del totorayoc will perform. Sunday’s lineup includes La sonora imbatible starting at noon along with La huella folk, Marka Supay, Los hermanitos Quiquiza, Ser del tiempo and Chicho Humacata among others.
The presentation took place at the Maurin family farm against a backdrop of local crops including maize and vegetables under the prominent Paleta del Pintor hill. Marta Maurin welcomed authorities and press members while recalling stories from past festivals with Aparicio and Quispe.
Prieto concluded by inviting attendees to enjoy tastings of humitas and corn with goat cheese accompanied by wines from Jesús Vilte winery and Finca Incahuasi.
