The municipality of Maimará will hold the 49th Festival del choclo y el folclore today and tomorrow, April 10 and 11, according to organizers. The event is described as the most important musical and gastronomic gathering in the region, aimed at valuing local traditions. It is organized by the municipality led by Susana Prieto.
The festival will begin this evening at 7:30 p.m. with an official ceremony on Lavalle Street between Avenida Belgrano and San Martín. The opening will be attended by Mayor Prieto, provincial deputy Carlos Haquim, municipal secretaries Pablo López (Culture) and Luis Zerpa (Tourism), founders Jorge Quispe and Carlos Aparicio, as well as invited guests.
A gastronomic fair will also open during the festival where local cooks will serve dishes made from corn such as humitas, pastel de choclo, corn with goat cheese, tamales, empanadas de choclo, lamb roast with corn, potatoes and cheese among others.
Additionally, a museum dedicated to the history of the festival will be open in the neighborhood center hall. Visitors can view photographs, promotional posters, memorabilia, writings, tickets and souvenirs related to previous editions of this popular celebration.
Afterwards officials and guests will proceed to the municipal shed where performances are scheduled on a stage named after Washington Villagarcía along with brothers Jorge and Rolando Giménez—creators of “La maimareña” zamba. Tonight’s lineup includes Joaquín Sosa; Las cuatro cuerdas; Alma chaqueña; Copleros; Canto del alma; Wara Calpanchay; Kimsa Juy; Las voces del totorayoc among others as well as native dance groups. The show is expected to last until around 5:30 a.m.
