Norsk e-Fuel AS and Braskem have announced a strategic partnership to explore the use of e-Naphtha, a synthetic feedstock produced from captured carbon, in the plastics value chain. The collaboration aims to develop plastics from carbon that would otherwise be emitted into the atmosphere.
Norsk e-Fuel is advancing Power-to-Liquid (PtL) technology by constructing large-scale facilities that convert renewable electricity, water, and captured CO2 into synthetic fuels and feedstocks. The company plans to operate at least three plants by 2032 with a combined annual output exceeding 200,000 tons of e-Fuels. Approximately one quarter of this production could be allocated as e-Naphtha for plastic manufacturing.
Braskem’s sustainability strategy, called “Keeping Carbon in the Loop,” focuses on maintaining carbon within products through renewable and circular solutions. The company already produces bio-based polyethylene at scale using sugarcane ethanol and offers certified solutions for markets where fully segregated supply chains are not yet available. By processing e-Naphtha into polypropylene and other materials, Braskem intends to broaden its portfolio with plastics that have a lower climate impact.
“e-Naphtha is more than a by-product; it is a valuable feedstock for creating long-lasting, circular products,” said Lars Bjørn Larsen, CCO of Norsk e-Fuel. “By capturing carbon and embedding it into durable, recyclable materials, we keep carbon in use and out of the atmosphere.”
“Plastics are essential to modern life, and by producing them with captured carbon, we keep that carbon in the economy—not in the air,” said Walmir Soller, Vice President for North America, Europe, and Asia (NAMEA) and CEO of Braskem BV. “This collaboration reflects our commitment to innovation and to building value chains that enable circularity and carbon neutrality.”
The partnership will focus on developing processes for integrating e-Naphtha into plastic production lines while assessing market opportunities among customers interested in circular solutions. The initiative also emphasizes the role of carbon capture utilization (CCU) in establishing new value chains within the plastics industry.
Norsk e-Fuel was founded in 2019 with the goal of supporting renewable aviation through sustainable fuel production based on CO2 and water. The company is working with investors and partners to industrialize Power-to-Liquid production.
Braskem employs nearly 8,000 people worldwide across 40 industrial units located in Brazil, the United States, Mexico, and Germany. Its products reach clients in over 70 countries.
