Older adults in Palpalá are participating in free weekly newcom classes offered by the municipality at the Municipal Olympic Stadium, according to an April 3 announcement. The initiative is part of the Sports Schools program and aims to provide accessible physical activity for people aged 40 and above.
The program matters as it offers a space for older residents to stay active, socialize, and engage in adapted sports. Classes take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7 p.m. to 9:45 p.m., with interested individuals encouraged to visit the Sports Directorate at the municipal facility on Chacho Peñaloza street in the Canal de Beagle neighborhood.
Mariano Gutiérrez, instructor of the discipline, said that “this sport is designed for people aged 40 and over who once practiced sports like volleyball or soccer and now seek an option adapted to their age. The training sessions are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7 p.m. to 9:45 p.m. at the Olympic Stadium facilities, a space provided by Mayor Rubén Eduardo Rivarola, which allows them to continue activities even on rainy days.” Gutiérrez also thanked institutional support that makes it possible for the activity to be completely free.
He added that friendly matches with teams from other departments are organized throughout the year, including a recent encounter with a team from Perico. These events aim to showcase participants’ efforts and encourage more people to join.
The friendly matches take place at the Olympic Stadium where Palpalá’s newcom team welcomed mixed teams in +50 and +60 categories from neighboring cities. Organizers say these encounters help foster greater commitment during training sessions while providing valuable experience against other players—an approach extended across various sports within Palpalá’s Municipal Sports Schools.
