A ceremony and civic-military parade took place in Palpalá on April 2 at Plaza “Héroes de Malvinas” to honor the residents of Jujuy who participated in the 1982 conflict. The event was led by Governor Carlos Sadir, with provincial and municipal authorities, legislators, city council members, and security forces also present.
The commemoration aimed to recognize the contributions of local veterans. Sadir said he appreciated the large turnout from Palpalá’s community paying tribute to those who served. “Me parece positivo que la comunidad reconozca que es importante la malvinización día a día,” Sadir said.
Sadir also recalled a recent meeting with veterans where they expressed their wish to return to the Malvinas Islands. He stated that the government of Jujuy would work to support former combatants’ efforts to visit the islands again.
Mayor Rubén Eduardo Rivarola addressed attendees as well, saying: “Es importante homenajear a los veteranos por todo lo que dieron.” He encouraged dialogue as a means for recovering sovereignty over the islands and added: “Nosotros vamos a seguir trabajando para que los caídos sepan que no serán olvidados.”
Oscar Chiliguay from Asociación de Excombatientes ‘2 de Mayo’ said it was an honor for veterans to receive Governor Sadir at the event. “Ver la plaza colmada y recordar a nuestros camaradas caídos en Malvinas es siempre emoción,” Chiliguay said. He called for continued promotion of awareness about Malvinas in schools throughout the year so that it is not forgotten.
Chiliguay concluded by highlighting Governor Sadir’s support for ensuring that local veterans have equal rights across Argentina and can travel next year to visit Malvinas.
