Palpalá held a ceremony on April 2 to honor the veterans of the Malvinas conflict, bringing together local officials, students, security forces, and residents at the “Héroes de Malvinas” plaza. The event followed a week of commemorative activities that began with a vigil at Cine Altos Hornos Zapla.
The gathering aimed to recognize those who served in the conflict and reinforce the importance of remembering their sacrifice. The day featured religious blessings, floral offerings at the monument dedicated to combatants, and renditions of the Argentine National Anthem and Marcha de Malvinas.
His remarks emphasized collective responsibility in keeping the memory alive.
Veteran Oscar Chiliguay reflected on past commemorations when only a few former soldiers gathered: “Los verdaderos héroes son los que quedaron allá. Nosotros tuvimos la suerte de volver, formar familia y estar entre ustedes. Por eso hace 44 años que venimos pregonando el tema de Malvinas, para que no quede en el olvido.” Chiliguay also asked Governor Carlos Sadir to help veterans from Jujuy visit the islands as is done in other provinces.
Cecilia Vargas, director of Bachillerato N° 22 “Héroes de Malvinas,” said: “Malvinas no es un acto ni un protocolo, Malvinas es memoria viva, identidad y presencia,” expressing gratitude for veterans sharing their experiences with students.
After speeches concluded, participants moved to Avenida del Congreso for a civic-military parade featuring local veterans and guests from Tucumán and Buenos Aires. Military bands provided music as delegations marched before provincial authorities led by Governor Sadir.
Several officials voiced support for ongoing recognition efforts. Rubén Rivarola stated that promoting awareness about Malvinas should be daily work: “Esto debe seguir todos los días… Nuestras tierras y recursos naturales se defienden… queremos que se respete a toda nuestra Argentina.” Provincial deputy Verónica Valente committed to supporting travel requests for Jujuy’s veterans so they can pay tribute on the islands themselves. Deputy Noemí Isasmendi highlighted ongoing needs among former combatants regarding pensions and benefits.
