Pilgrims and sikuri bands began their ascent to the sanctuary of the Virgin of Copacabana at Abra de Punta Corral after receiving blessings from Father Ricardo Rivero, parish priest of Tilcara, following the start of Holy Week on March 30.
The annual pilgrimage is significant for many faithful in the region, as it marks a central tradition during Holy Week. Sikuri bands play an important role in this event, accompanying pilgrims with music as they journey up the mountain.
According to organizers, blessings for the sikuri musicians will continue throughout today until midnight. Father Rivero and other priests from the Diocese of Jujuy are scheduled to bless those ascending so that they may return with the sacred image on Wednesday afternoon. Among those blessed was Rosa MÃstica, a female sikuri band celebrating its 25th anniversary. Other groups included Sanidad, Virgen del Rosario de San Nicolás, and Nuestra Señora de La Merced. Five bands from Perico were also expected to arrive and begin their climb later in the day.
A total of 84 registered bands will participate in this year’s pilgrimage. As part of tradition, Humahuaca’s sikuris depart early in the morning after receiving their blessing at church. The captain of each group receives an identifying ribbon and a set of rules governing conduct during ascent, stay at the sanctuary, and descent.
Registration for all participating bands will close tomorrow at 1 p.m., followed by a drawing later that day to determine which groups will carry out specific duties during descent.
Sikuris expressed appreciation for Mayor Sonia Pérez’s support through donations of food supplies and other essentials while they remain at Abra de Punta Corral.
