Thousands of pilgrims climbed Cerro de la Cruz in the Cerro las Rosas neighborhood of the provincial capital on Good Friday, April 3, as part of a longstanding tradition to express their faith during a day marked by reflection for Catholic believers.
The event is significant for many local residents who observe this annual pilgrimage as an important expression of devotion. The climb brings together people from different parts of Jujuy, uniting them in a shared act of faith and community.
Carlos Mamani, Provincial Coordinator of Emergencies, said to Canal 7 de Jujuy that the ascent began early in the morning. “A temprana hora hicimos un relevamiento a partir de las 7, ya veÃamos que ascendÃan los peregrinos,” Mamani said.
Regarding safety measures in place for the event, Mamani said personnel from Civil Defense, Provincial Firefighters, Alto Comedero Volunteer Firefighters, and SAME were working at various health stations along the route. “Estamos contando más de 40 efectivos entre los Bomberos Voluntarios y Defensa Civil. Asà que es un trabajo mancomunado con todas las instituciones, siempre tenemos comunicación ante cualquier evento que pueda surgir,” he said.
The coordinated efforts among emergency services aim to ensure that participants can complete their pilgrimage safely. The presence of health posts and rescue teams provides reassurance to those making the journey up Cerro de la Cruz.
As Good Friday continues to draw large crowds each year for this tradition in Jujuy’s capital city, local authorities remain vigilant and prepared to support both spiritual observance and public safety.
