Pilgrims and sikuri musicians in Tilcara began their journey on March 31 to the sanctuary of the Virgin of Copacabana at Abra de Punta Corral, seeking her protection during an annual pilgrimage. Before starting the ascent, participants gathered at the “Nuestra Señora del Rosario” church to receive blessings and farewells from local residents as they passed through the town’s central streets toward the hills.
The event drew bands of sikuris from various communities including Humahuaca, El Aguilar, Perico, Maimará, Huacalera, and Juella. They arrived throughout the morning and played traditional melodies at the church while priests welcomed them with gratitude and well wishes for their journey.
After midday, most of the sikuri musicians departed together. Many community members came to see them off at the church since among those leaving were family members and neighbors who joined in search of “la venerada.” On Lavalle street—from Alverro where the church is located up to and beyond the main square—sikuris waited patiently for their turn to enter the temple before beginning their climb.
Organizers said that weather conditions on Sunday were favorable both in town and along the route. This was expected to allow a safe walk despite forecasts predicting lower temperatures overnight.
Today celebrations will take place at both locations: pilgrims will honor the Virgin at her mountain sanctuary while those remaining can visit an open church in town before further groups depart. The routine in Tilcara is set to change until tomorrow afternoon when pilgrims return with images of “la Virgen.”
