President Javier Milei will lead the main ceremony for the Day of the Veteran and Fallen in the Malvinas War at Plaza San MartÃn in Buenos Aires’ Retiro neighborhood on April 2. The event is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
The ceremony marks an important national commemoration, honoring veterans and those who died during the conflict over the Malvinas Islands. During his speech, Milei is expected to reaffirm Argentina’s claim to sovereignty over the islands and emphasize that a prosperous Argentina is key to strengthening efforts for their recovery.
After Milei’s address, there will be a floral offering at the monument dedicated to those who fell in combat, followed by a minute of silence at the plaque honoring the “unknown soldier.” The event comes as Milei considers a possible trip to the United Kingdom between April and May. His goal would be to negotiate lifting restrictions that prevent Argentina from acquiring arms due to its ongoing claim over the Malvinas. In an interview with British newspaper The Telegraph, Milei said that “the islands should be returned through negotiation and when islanders so wish,” while also stating that sovereignty over the territory “is not negotiable.”
Many high-ranking officials are expected at Thursday’s event, including Secretary of Presidency Karina Milei; Chamber of Deputies President MartÃn Menem; Buenos Aires Mayor Jorge Macri; as well as ministers responsible for security, defense, and interior affairs. Also attending will be Chief Minister Manuel Adorni, who is currently under judicial investigation regarding his assets.
In addition to events in Buenos Aires, ceremonies are planned in Ushuaia and RÃo Grande with participation from provincial leaders such as Axel Kicillof and Gustavo Melella. Local vigils are anticipated to have significant political presence and may include criticism directed toward national authorities.
