President Javier Milei accused Vice President Victoria Villarruel of “betrayal” and attempting to “boycott” him, according to statements made on April 5 during his visit to Spain. The comments were made in an interview with a Spanish media outlet, where Milei said the internal conflict between them dates back to 2021 when they both served in Congress.
Milei’s remarks come as he participates in the Madrid Economic Forum, highlighting ongoing tensions within Argentina’s government leadership. The president alleged that Villarruel tried to interfere with official activities abroad, saying these actions are part of a long-standing strategy. “In light of her behavior, it does not surprise me that she tried to have my events canceled,” Milei said.
The dispute was further emphasized by Milei referencing the failed Pacto de Mayo event, noting Villarruel’s absence due to reported health issues. He questioned this explanation by stating: “She said she was not going because she felt unwell, but the next day she was at a parade.” The president also criticized members of Villarruel’s inner circle for their public criticism and insults toward his administration, which he said contributes to distrust within the government.
Additionally, Milei mentioned rumors about possible political maneuvers against him involving dissenting sectors from Spain’s Vox party. Despite these internal conflicts, he recently celebrated new poverty statistics released by INDEC showing a decline in Argentina’s poverty rate from 31.6% in the previous period to 28.2% for the second half of 2025—the lowest level in recent years—and indigence dropping from 6.9% to 6.3%. However, around 13 million people remain below the poverty line.
Officials from the Ministry of Human Capital attributed this reduction in poverty rates to policies aimed at lowering inflation and stabilizing the economy alongside targeted support programs for vulnerable groups.
As tensions persist among top leaders, observers are watching how these divisions may impact future governance and policy implementation.
