Carlos Ariel Gil Urquiola, head of the Security Secretariat, said on March 28 that property crimes, especially robberies, are currently the most common offenses in Jujuy. He made these remarks during an interview with La Mejor Mañana two weeks after taking office.
Urquiola said the main concern for security authorities is addressing thefts and related property crimes. He also mentioned that there are incidents linked to problematic alcohol consumption but emphasized that efforts remain focused on reducing robberies.
The official identified the Valles region—particularly cities such as Perico and El Carmen—as among the hardest hit by these issues. To address this, he announced plans to strengthen police operations and increase law enforcement presence in those areas. “We are working together with municipalities and provincial police, reinforcing controls and presence in sectors where greater problems have been detected,” Urquiola said.
Among new measures, Urquiola highlighted an expansion of video surveillance systems: “The idea is to move forward with installing more security cameras at various strategic points as part of a phased effort.” He also indicated that new police officers will soon join local forces: “We are waiting for personnel who are currently being trained to join us; this will help reinforce our presence on the ground,” he said.
Urquiola addressed drug dealing at a local level as another ongoing challenge. “It is a dynamic situation—when one sales point closes, another may open. That is why territorial presence and constant action are key,” he explained.
He noted recent meetings with mayors aimed at coordinating joint actions: “Security concerns all of us and requires coordinated work,” Urquiola stated. He concluded by reminding residents about available channels for reporting crimes—including anonymous options—and stressed public involvement: “People’s cooperation is essential so we can act and prevent crime.”
