A supercomputer from Opta Analyst has predicted on Apr. 2 that Spain is the leading favorite to win the 2026 FIFA World Cup, ahead of other major teams including France, England, and Argentina. The tournament will take place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico with all 48 participating countries already confirmed.

The forecast matters because it offers a data-driven look at potential outcomes for one of the most anticipated sporting events worldwide. These predictions can influence public expectations and spark discussions among fans and analysts.

Opta Analyst, which is part of Stats Perform and specializes in sports data analysis using artificial intelligence, simulated millions of possible scenarios to generate its rankings. According to its model, Spain holds a 15.83% probability of becoming champion. France follows with a 12.77% chance while England stands at 11.8%. Argentina—the current title holder—appears in fourth place among likely winners.

Portugal rounds out the top five contenders with a probability of 6.92%. Traditional football powers Brazil and Germany are listed further down according to these projections, which marks an unusual shift compared to previous tournaments where they have typically been considered favorites.

The predictive model by Opta Analyst provides an early outlook on how national teams may perform when competition begins on June 11 at Estadio Ciudad de México.
