A large number of pilgrims gathered in Tumbaya for the traditional Virgin of Punta Corral pilgrimage, one of the most attended religious events in northern Argentina, according to a March 31 announcement. The event drew thousands over the weekend and highlighted both local infrastructure and assistance operations.
The importance of safe passage was underlined by the new pedestrian and productive bridge at Tunalito, which became a key point along the route. The bridge allowed for safer crossing over the river in an area that has historically posed challenges for both pilgrims and residents.
Central activities took place from March 25 to March 29, with the descent of the Virgin’s image on Palm Sunday marking a significant moment. Provincial agencies coordinated special operations throughout this period to manage logistics and safety measures.
The SAME 107 emergency system set up specific health services, including additional resources, independent logistics, and improved communication using antennas installed in strategic locations. These efforts aimed to provide coverage along all parts of the pilgrimage route.
“The bridge allowed smooth and safe transit,” said Diego Valdecantos, secretary of Tourism. He also noted that this infrastructure benefits not only faith tourism but also supports local producers.
Officials reviewed these developments after concluding one of Jujuy province’s most important annual religious gatherings—an event that requires extensive planning due to its high attendance and challenging terrain.
