The school year for 2026 officially began in Uquía, where students from the initial, primary, and secondary levels returned to class in a ceremony held at Escuela Primaria N° 27 “Juan Galo Lavalle.” The event also marked the completion of expansion and renovation works funded through PROMACE with support from the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (BCIE). The upgrades improved facilities at the primary school, the attached kindergarten, and Colegio Secundario N° 26.
Vice Governor Alberto Bernis and Education Minister Daniela Teseira led the ceremony. During her speech, Teseira addressed the significance of the first day of school: “Quien ha estado frente a un aula sabe lo que significa este día. La mezcla entre nervios y expectativas. La responsabilidad inmensa de mirar a los ojos a un grupo de estudiantes y saber que de alguna manera uno también forma parte de su historia.”
She emphasized that infrastructure improvements represent more than physical changes: “No es solo infraestructura, es dignidad, es respeto. La educación no es un trámite administrativo, es un acto de confianza en el futuro.”
Teseira also spoke about inclusion as essential to educational quality: “No puede haber calidad educativa si no hay una inclusión real. No puede haber futuro si dejamos a alguien atrás.”
Vice Governor Bernis delivered greetings from Governor Carlos Sadir and stated: “La educación es fundamental para el crecimiento de los pueblos. Desde Uquía dejamos inaugurado el ciclo lectivo 2026.”
During the event, María Elena Lamas was introduced as the new head of Initial and Primary Education. She committed to transformative pedagogical leadership focused on teamwork and collective effort. Lamas announced plans for projects related to comprehensive literacy, emotional education, and inclusion.
The community welcomed students back with improved facilities and renewed commitment from educators and officials.
