The image of the Virgen de Copacabana de Punta Corral arrived in Tumbaya on March 30, accompanied by a large crowd of sikuris bands and pilgrims. The procession, which has taken place for nearly two centuries through the hills of Quebrada jujeña, drew significant participation from people of all ages.
The event marks an important tradition for the local community as it coincides with the beginning of Holy Week. Many children joined the sikuris bands, playing traditional instruments such as quenas, zamponias, and drums to welcome the Virgin. The image was adorned with white and yellow flowers and placed in a small wooden urn inscribed with “this is the true image of the Virgen de Copacabana de Punta Corral.”
After blessing palm branches, Bishop César Daniel Fernández led a central mass at Tumbaya’s church. “Today, at the start of Palm Sunday, we begin Holy Week, which is the most important time for Christians. We also conclude these days honoring our Mamita del Cerro, whom many have visited at her sanctuary in Punta Corral,” Fernández said.
He continued: “Today we bring her down so that she may be closer to us during Holy Week and throughout Easter time. The Virgin will remain close to parish communities and all those who come on pilgrimage to honor her.” Fernández also addressed those present by saying: “At this beginning of Holy Week, we ask that this time be one of grace for everyone—a time to encounter God and convert our hearts so that we can become better Christians each day.” He highlighted that the Virgin is considered mother both to God made man and all who believe in her love.
The arrival ceremony underscored both religious devotion and cultural tradition among residents as well as visitors who traveled from other areas.
